A LITTLE HISTORY, AS I REMEMBER IT

These sketch/illustrations were front end proposals (face lifts) for the

AMC “American”. Notice the body section and green house of the prev-

ious model. As you can see, the proportions in width is exaggerated.

This is pretty much the way it was done (more dramatic) then. Now days

these sketches would be more on package. This makes it easier to trans-

late the design when making a full scale model.

This a design proposal for a new car model. The green house and

basic body was to be used. This design was modeled 1:1, however

I don’t remember it being finished. Check out the little eyes in the fore-

ground bushes. Hey, I was just a kid.

Here is another proposal on the same chassis and existing door skins

and windows. Richard Teague headed the design department at the

time and he wanted to see a “fastback” design with a new front end.

This is what I supplied. This was a period when we had a little more

time to spend on a “rendering” instead of just pencil sketches.

We were always trying new techniques. Here is an experiment using the

blueprint machine. The sketch was done on vellum with black Prismacolor

pencil and the an Ozlid (brown line) was run on Mylar, frosted side up. Then

white tempera was used to add some highlights.

During the Virgil Exner era at Chrysler, this design was based on a basic

body design that was established by Exner. You may recognize the low

wide point in the body section. This was reflected in the Valiant,

Plymouth, and Chrysler.
